Course Title

Math 227 - Elementary Statistics

Prerequisite

 

Satisfactory completion of Math 125 (Intermediate Algebra) or acceptable level of skills as demonstrated in Mathematics placement process.  Please make sure that the admission office has a record that you have completed the prerequisite before the first day of class.

Course Description

This course covers chapters 1 – 12 of the required textbook, which include:  Probability; Probability Distributions:  Normal and Binomial; Estimation; Hypothesis Testing; Regression; Contingency Table; and One-way Analysis of Variance.

Calculator Requirement



You need to have a TI-83 graphing calculator.  The calculator can be used for homework assignments, quizzes, and tests.  The calculator costs about $90 - $100 or you can borrow it from the math department for $15 for one semester.  If interested to borrow, please contact the mathematics department at (323) 265-8886.  You need to return the calculator right after the final exam otherwise a hold will be placed on your account and you will be charged $200.

By the end of the course, students will be able to, through reading, exercises, discussions, quizzes, and exams:

Fully understand and able to apply the idea of Mean, Standard Deviation, and Variance for describing and inferring data sets.

Understand the basic concept of probability.

Understand and able to apply the basic concepts of probability distribution, i.e. Normal Distribution and Binomial Distribution.

Be able to conduct 1-sample and 2-sample hypothesis testing.

Apply the knowledge of linear regression.
